Fostering Compassion for Fishes

Ethologist and best-selling author Jonathan Balcombe will share his wealth of knowledge about the sentience of fishes and their incredible abilities to express virtue, offer mutual aid, and seek comfort. He will provide excerpts from his first children’s book, Jake and Ava: A Boy and a Fish, demonstrating how the book takes a humane education approach to fostering empathy for fishes and providing opportunities to think critically about our relationship to other species. Humane educator, Kim Korona, from HEART, will offer additional activities, strategies, and resources for teaching about fishes, and discuss how our relationship with them connects to environmental preservation, and our own wellbeing. Learning objectives: Participants will: learn about the sentience and complex behaviors of fishes. gain tools and resources for fostering empathy and compassion for fishes. receive strategies for teaching students to think critically about their relationship to fishes. consider ways to teach about the connections between our treatment of fishes, environmental conservation, and the health and wellbeing of people.
