"Therapy Dogs in the High School Setting: How to Initiate, Implement and Establish a Therapy Dog Program to Meet the Social-Emotional Needs of the Adolescent Learner"

Jessica Maricevic

Although there is a growing trend for therapy dogs to be situated in elementary schools, and to some extent the middle school setting, there is little research about the related outcomes or processes for bringing a therapy dog into secondary school for any purposes including those related to SEL development (Gee et al., 2017). That is until Jessica's 2022 groundbreaking qualitative study. This November, join Jessica as she empowers participants with insight into the viability of a therapy dog program to meet the social-emotional needs of adolescent learners, and enhance the learning environment, as a whole, for all stakeholders in their school. Participants will leave with an understanding of key terminology, debunk misconceptions associated with viability of therapy dogs in secondary schools, determine their school's need for a therapy dog (their why), and establish next steps for solidifying the presence of a therapy dog in the high school setting (initiate, implement, establish).
