Jane Greco Deming Jane’s most notable accomplishment was the creation of the first-of-its-kind in the nation children’s museum exhibit now known as, Pets & People at the Providence Children’s Museum. In early 2006 the one millionth visitor, toured the space that is designed to teach children through exploration and role-playing the importance of kindness and responsibility toward animals. The exhibit garnered several awards and gained national acclaim for its uniqueness and quality. She also created a children’s coloring book called, “Let’s Play it Safe around Dogs.” Many other shelters and humane organizations now use that lesson plan to deliver its important messages about safe dog interactions. In February of 2007 she, along with her collaborative partner, Katenna Jones, Humane Educator for American Humane and formally Animal Behaviorist at the RISPCA unveiled “Baby-Ready Pets.” This kit is designed to teach shelter staff how to run workshops for expectant parents on how the prepare pets for the arrival of a new baby, so that all will be safe. A IWRA certified wildlife rehabilitator for nearly 30 years, Jane was instrumental in establishing a rehab program in her state. She served on the board of the Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE) from 2001 to 2007 and is now, back on the board for another term. She also serves on the board of directors of Southwick’s Zoo. She is the former director of the RI Disaster Animal Response Team or RIDART and is certified in disaster preparedness. |
